Obamas officially open black history museum

“It’s like walking across the desert and finally getting to a fountain of water to quench your thirst”. “It’s absolutely breathtaking for me”. By bringing the uncomfortable parts of our past out of the shadows, we can better understand what divides us and seek to heal those problems through our unity. It is not a black people’s story. “Our stories have shaped every corner of our culture”. Mamie Till’s decision to show her son’s grotesquely battered and shot body in an open casket that was photographed and shared nationally has always been said to be one important turning point in the mid-century civil rights fight. Many of its 37,000 artifacts were donated.

Bunch also acknowledges the opportunity that the museum has in light of recent events. While other structures on the Mall are made of marble, granite or concrete, the museum’s unique design means it changes appearance depending on the time of day.disabledSW7Gw4cb7nA193742193748http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/carl-reiner-comedian-mel-brooks-best-friend/Carl Reiner on being a comedian and Mel Brooks’ best friendCarl Reiner never thought about going into comedy growing up. “The Smithsonian is this incredible place where people will grapple with issues and ideas that they won’t in other places”.

“As Americans, we rightfully passed on the tales of the giants who built this country; who led armies into battle and waged seminal debates in the halls of Congress and the corridors of power”, he said. The museum opened in Washington this Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, aiming to tell the story of black people in the USA through compelling artifacts, yet visitors will find few personal mementos from one of the most famous and influential black Americans, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Former President Bush, who signed the legislation authorizing the museum’s construction in 2003, said the museum showed a commitment to truth.

“It can also help black visitors appreciate the fact that not only is this younger generation carrying on traditions of the past, but within the white communities across the nation, we see the sincerity of law-enforcement officers who, in fits and starts, are struggling to understand and are trying to do the right thing”, Mr. Obama said. “It’s a handsome thing, especially in this day and time when we’re fighting to remind ourselves how important black lives are”.

The 400,000-square-foot museum, designed by British-Ghanaian architect David Adjaye, strikes a unique shape on the Mall with its three-tiered bronze exterior panels inspired by an African wooden column.

Some of the exhibits in the new museum date from the slave trade.

The plan for the museum began in 1915 with African American Civil War veterans looking for a way to commemorate America’s black experience.

This addition to the cultural landscape has been a dream for 100 years. “It makes people excited about the stories we’re telling”.

The Birmingham museum gets about 150,000 visitors per year. During an interview airing Friday, he voiced his appreciation for all of those whose work helped make the museum happen.
