Oculus Rift coming to NZ

On the content side of the equation, preordered systems will come bundled with Lucky’s Tale by Playful and CCP’s EVE: Valkyrie. You can also run a diagnostic on the company’s website to see if your computer is compatible before pre-ordering it.

Oculus has officially opened up the flood-gates on pre-order for the Rift, though the price-point is somewhat steeper than originally expected, with a tag of approximately $599. If you preorder the Rift, you’ll be first in line for preorders of the Touch.

But many were annoyed by the price of the headset. The device is now available for pre-order at $599, and will be shipped across the globe at the end of March.

To be fair, the Oculus Rift is by far and away the most advanced VR headset, and Oculus are actually selling their headsets at a loss. The company had previously said that it could cost $200-$400, before announcing that the price would be “at least $300”.

According to the official page, the Oculus Rift is expected to ship in April.

The Rift comes with an Xbox One controller, an external tracking camera, a remote, and a pretty snazzy box.

And in response to complaints about the list price, Luckey tweeted: “To reiterate, we are not making money on Rift hardware”. And if Oculus had decided for a cheaper headset, it would have risked turning people off VR altogether, he argued.

Even with the Oculus Rift price being higher than anticipated, plenty of folks will still plop down $600 for the Rift. Oculus VR has made it clear that there are plenty of updates and improvements to be made for future versions of the Oculus Rift as it continues the long road towards the ideal HMD.
