The first customer to receive the consumer version of Oculus Rift, which began shipping this week, has a rave review after playing with some of the virtual reality experiences offered through the headset. Lucas Matney of TechCrunch posted his review and experience of Oculus Rift and while he seemed pretty impressed by it, he suggests it’s still practical to hold off buying the said gadget.
Early next week the main competitor to the Oculus Rift will also be launching in the form of the HTC Vive VR headset which is also now available to preorder and is priced slightly higher than the Oculus Rift at $799.
Analysts say they don’t expect sales of Oculus to have a big impact on Facebook’s business-Facebook bought the company for US$2 billion two years ago-but the reality of sales remains to be seen.
While we have no news on the number of Kickstarter headsets sent out, the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign shows a total of 9,522 backers. They include not only the headset but also the certified PC required to run it. They start at $1,499 but can cost upwards of $3,000. During the live stream Mark, along with Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe and Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer, answered questions about their latest virtual reality headset.

Customers who preordered the Rift were originally told that March 28 would be when their VR headsets would be shipped.
