A day after announcing curbs on private vehicles in the city from next year, the Delhi government on Sunday said that odd-numbered cars will be allowed to ply on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and even-numbered vehicles will run on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Speaking to TOI, Delhi home minister Satyendar Jain, who also holds the health portfolio, said that traffic police will be informed soon about the details.

“On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, odd numbered vehicles shall be allowed on roads in every week”.

“Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will have even numbered vehicles on roads, and we don’t care about which cars belonged to whom”, Jain said.

“Odd-Even components will even be relevant on all ministers and officers. Government vehicles are one of the biggest culprits of pollution”, the former minister said when asked whether vehicles of ministers should be allowed. “I may also use my automotive on alternate days and will use carpooling service on different days”, Jain stated.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s move to reduce air pollution in the capital is ill-conceived to say the least.

The PIL seeks a stay on the Delhi government’s decision to allow even and odd number cars to ply in the city on alternate days. “Due to heavy smog, such a state of affairs has emerged that individuals are being suggested towards going for train”, he stated. Jain also said that the government will also do something about rampant use of generators by companies in the national capital which also contribute to pollution. People are enthusiastic and we assure them that a good public transport system will be put in place to ensure the success of this measure, ” Mr. Jain said. “As DTC and cluster buses don’t have sufficient numbers, government should allow pending applications for new permits”, Rajendra Soni, Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh’s general secretary, said.
