Odell Beckham Jr. and the Giants are headed for another standoff

Beckham is entering his fifth season in the National Football League and is scheduled to play the 2018 season on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal.

As of Monday afternoon, Mara and the Giants are holding true to their word and are apparently listening to some offers.

But if it isn’t, there’s a team in Cleveland with both the assets and the track record to suggest that they’d more than likely be interested in a potential blockbuster trade.

“WR Odell Beckham Jr will not set foot on a field without a new contract extension agreed to – with the #Giants or any team”, a tweet by NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport read in part.

The Giants might wind up trying to call his bluff in the event they can’t hammer out a long-term contract, and things could get even uglier than they are now. Beckham would obviously slide into the number one receiver role while Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp would be two and three on the depth chart.

But Shanahan and John Lynch have emphasized character and locker room fit while adding players to their new-look roster since getting hired in February 2017.

“The News has learned that the Giants’ asking price in a prospective Beckham trade is starting at a first-round pick plus”, Leonard writes.

Finally, what would the Giants want in return for Beckham, and how much would be too much for the Browns to pay? “I still believe he’ll be able to show him what we expect of him”.

He said it’s possible the Giants will try to make Beckham play on the final year of his rookie deal.

Teams in need of a No. 1 type-receiver like the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens could pursue Beckham in the belief that he could make them a playoff team.

The Giants should ask the Browns for the fourth overall pick this season, the 35th overall pick in the second-round this season, a fourth-round pick this season, and a first or second-round pick next season.

Beckham’s claim is a classic leverage ploy at this point of negotiations, though it does have a different tinge to it with Mara’s recent comments.
