In the almost nine-minute video, posted to Youtube by the 13-year-old boy’s father, about a dozen or so students are seen as the officer argues with a young girl walking across his lawn before the boy comes to her defense, subsequently scuffling with the officer on the sidewalk.
After police arrive, the off-duty officer puts his hands up and is walked away to be interviewed while the teenager eventually is handcuffed.
The officer and the two juveniles arrested have not been named.
Footage appearing to show the off-duty officer in an altercation with a group of teenagers was uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday. In it, a teenage boy in a hooded sweatshirt pushes back against a bald man in a blue checkered shirt who is holding him by the collar.
Jennifer Rojas, a policy advocate at the ACLU of Southern California, told NBC Los Angeles the organization is “deeply disturbed” by reports and demanded “a full explanation of why, in an altercation between the police officer and youths, the youths were arrested but not the officer who fired his gun”.
Police arrested two dozen people, including children, after the crowd ignored orders to disperse. Of those, six were minors, all of whom were released to the custody of their parents.
Christian’s mum Alma Jimenez addressed protesters in a video posted to her Facebook page. This is my son.
The incident has lest the family of the 13-year-old rattled. He was not armed.
An investigation to “determine the actions of the officer and the circumstances” is ongoing. “Thanks to God’s grace, [Christian] is alive”.
Involved in the scuffle was 13 year old Latino boy, Christian Dorscht who incurred bruising as the cop tussled with the boy.
Screams the son at one point, ‘I didn’t say that. He could have killed somebody … just for [walking] over the grass.
A 13-year-old and 15-year-old were arrested after the incident, the Los Angeles Times reported. LAPD Deputy Chief Michel Moore also spoke at the news conference, though he said he could not disclose any information regarding the off-duty officer’s history at the department.
As officers showed up to the protest in an attempt to keep order, a number of rioters started throwing rocks at the officers.
The officer was placed on administrative leave, according to an LAPD statement issued Wednesday night. The incident took place on Tuesday near the off-duty officer’s residence in Anaheim.
Anaheim police said LAPD is conducting a “concurrent/administrative investigation”.
