Off-duty officer who hit pedestrians is charged
He was apprehended thanks to passersby who saw him try to run out of the auto, according to the New York Post, and kept its doors closed until police arrived.

Officer Brian Magoolaghan, a police spokesman, said Batka has worked 1½ years in the New York Police Department Transit Bureau Manhattan task force.
Four people were rushed to the hospital, including a 20-year-old woman. His name was not immediately released.
“He’s a really good guy”, said Angelica Zielinski, who said she was a friend of Batkas.
The other man and woman were stable as of this morning.
The Daily News also reports that NYPD Inspector Scott Shanley told reporters at the scene that Batka had been charged with DWI and suspended from the force; he was later charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, and assault.
One of the pedestrians, a 21-year-old man, was killed in the crash, while another – a 22-year-old woman – is in critical condition with head injuries, a police spokeswoman said.
The driver has been identified as 28-year-old Nicholas Batka. Batka faces driving-while-intoxicated charges after the accident at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Two victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition, and a third was taken to Cornell in serious condition.
