With this release, Microsoft is claiming to have “modernized” the user interface of Office 2016 for Mac while also supporting Apple-branded capabilities such as Retina displays, Multi-Touch gestures and Full Screen views.

“The new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote provide the best of both worlds for Mac users – the familiar Office experience paired with the best of Mac”, said corporate vice president for Office client applications and services Krk Koenigsbauer.

According to Microsoft, Office 365 subscribers can get the newest version of Office for Mac today.

If you’re a Mac user and an Office 365 subscriber, you can get the new Office for Mac right now through your Office account.

Office 2016 for mac marks almost 5 years since the last release of office for mac in 2011, and Microsoft has created some trendy changes to support however office and OS X have modified over the years.

Microsoft points out that a standalone version will not become available until September. But Microsoft’s argument is that, with Office, your work is connected and stored in the cloud-available on basically whatever platform you wish.

Microsoft shared that Office for Mac will continue to be the subject of ongoing improvements over time. Also, plans are available for students to give Office 2016 for Mac for free or for a significant discount.

A “Recommended Charts” feature was also made part of spreadsheets where chart previews of various data sets are shown for people to choose from.

Word for Mac has a new Design tab that sticks formatting and customization options in a single place.

You’ll also be able to start downloading the software today if you subscribe to Office 365.

“We wanted to make make sure that Mac users feel like first-class citizens in the Office story”, says Han-Yi Shaw, Microsoft’s principal manager for Office for Mac. Google has offered this with its online Google Apps suite, but it’s a feature that Office has lacked until recently.
