Edmonson said the shooting reportedly took place near a convenience store. According to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, they can hear the suspect sneezing from the tear gas.
There was no word on the conditions of the officer or the two people who were stabbed.
One police officer was wounded and taken to a hospital after a shooting Wednesday in Sunset, Louisiana, State Patrol Master Trooper Brooks David said. There was no word on the extent of the injuries. According to Acadian Ambulance tweets, the two other victims were transported to a local hospital while the officer was transported via helicopter. State Police are on the scene and say the SWAT team is surrounding a store on Anna Street. The town is located 10 miles north of Lafayette and 10 miles south of Opelousas.
Apparently, there were three people inside the gas station when the suspect showed up. The sheriff said the incident started off as a possible domestic issue and quickly turned into “hell in a hand basket”. Law enforcement personnel were communicating with the suspect. Earlier reports said there were up to 8 hostages but the St. Landry Parish police chief said there are none.
