Officer charged in Chicago shooting pleads not guilty
Republican Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said in a statement Tuesday that the shootings raise questions about why officers don’t have more options besides using lethal force.

The Republican says, “This tragedy further underscores the need for a broad and deep federal investigation, which I continue to strongly support”.
LeGrier’s father, Antonio LeGrier, has sued the city, both for wrongful death and for false arrest, saying he was detained and interrogated by the police after the shooting and not allowed to stay with his dying son.
Tensions are high in the U.S. city after a video of a fatal police shooting of a black teenager was released. The team is scheduled to play the Denver Nuggets in Denver on Tuesday night.
Critics have accused Emanuel of keeping the video under wraps until after he won a second term in April.
An online fundraiser has collected more than $11,000 for a Chicago family to help pay for the funeral expenses of a 55-year-old woman accidentally shot and killed by police over the weekend. The man then said that “the police are killing us”, and walked away from the officials.
Rahm Emanuel left the state with his family on December 18 and spent Christmas in Cuba, Fox News reports.
“Basically they were treating him like a criminal as if he had done something wrong, which he hadn’t”, said Basieilos Foutris, Antonio LeGrier’s lawyer, in an interview with The Chicago Tribune.
Dan Herbert, Van Dyke’s defense attorney, told AP that his client would not like to be viewed “as this cold-blooded killer”. They also say they are going to step up the pressure on Democrats so that they call on Rahm Emanuel to resign. Van Dyke faces six counts of first degree murder and another count of official misconduct.
“It is clear from recent incidents that substantive changes are needed in our police department, particularly around use of force and de-escalating conflicts, including interactions with individuals in crisis”, Collins said. “In Cook County it hasn’t been done in decades”, Herbert told NBC Chicago.
The indictment against Van Dyke, 37, marked the first time a Chicago police officer has been charged with first-degree murder for an on-duty fatality in almost 35 years.
The father of a 19-year-old who was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer this past weekend broke down crying multiple times during an interview on CNN this afternoon. Police have said that Mr McDonald refused to comply with orders to drop a knife he had been wielding.
Emanuel will address efforts to restore accountability and trust in department in a speech to City Hall Wednesday at 2 p.m. He will be joined by interim Police Superintendent John Escalante.
Van Dyke posted 10 percent of his $1.5 million bail last month and was released from jail.

Van Dyke was looking forward to clearing his name in court, his lawyer said.
