Details about the accident at the Criminal Justice Center were hazy Thursday, with the injured woman and officials giving different accounts. Debris from the first elevator hit the elevator in the basement.
Beverly Evans says, “I don’t know, something exploded in the elevator”.
The woman appeared to be OK, but was sent to the hospital as a precaution, Williams said.
Woman Describes “Explosion” as CJC Elevator FallsA woman who was inside an elevator when it fell at Philadelphia’s Criminal Justice Center Thursday morning described what she says sounded like an explosion as the elevator fell. Rescuers also responded to the basement area where they discovered an elevator with damage to its roof.
Eyewitness News is told the CJC will remain closed for the remainder of the day while L&I investigates what happened. “The thing just fell down on top of the elevator”. The extent of her injuries is unclear.
What caused the elevator to fall remains under investigation.

The elevators involved in the incidents are not open to the public and are primarily use by judges, The Legal Intelligencer reported.
