Officer injured in Kupwara

Kupwara: A day after an Indian Army officer was seriously injured in a gun battle with militants in Kupwara forests, Government Forces Monday claimed that it gunned down a non-local militant whose identity is yet to be ascertained. At that time, Three army men were killed in two separate gun battles between terrorists and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The encounter is still on, one militant has been killed, one officer was injured on Sunday”, said Ajaz Ahmed, SSP, Kupwara.

The army operation in the forests is on since November 13 when army received information about presence of militants in the area. What followed was one of the toughest and longest anti-terror operations launched by the Army in recent times, officers said. Colonel Santosh Mahadik was killed on November 17, Haji Naka forest area near Manigah village. The para commando Colonel Mahadik was leading from the front when he was attacked by cornered terrorists.

Lt. Colonel S.K. Natt was critically injured in the operation on Sunday.

Four militants, including three of Hizbul Mujahideen, were today killed in two gunfights during search operations in Anantnag and Kupwara districts of Kashmir valley, officials said.
