Officer Jason Van Dyke to Enter Plea
As new fatal shootings by Chicago police officers draw anger from critics and continued national attention, the officer at the center of the most notorious incident, Jason Van Dyke, is expected to plead not guilty Tuesday to six counts of first-degree murder charges.

He was released from jail in November, having posted 10 percent of his $1.5 million bail after spending six days behind bars.
A vigil has been held at a high school for a 19-year-old fatally shot over the weekend by Chicago police along with a 55-year-old downstairs neighbor.
The officer has not been to Chicago’s criminal courts building since earlier this month.
“There is no denying these are considered extremely sensitive cases and for good reason: There is no harder case to win for a prosecutor”, says Lawrence Rosenthal, a former deputy corporate counsel for the city of Chicago under former mayor Richard M. Daley. Both his attorney and McDonald’s family have previouslyu said they would like to see Van Dyke’s trial heard outside Cook County. Van Dyke’s lawyer said he may ask for a change of venue.
Police responding to a domestic dispute on Saturday killed a young black man who was allegedly holding a baseball bat as he came down the stairs and also “accidentally” shot dead his neighbour, a mother of five who had answered the door.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel “has essentially told everyone in the public, everyone in the City Council that my client actually murdered Mr. McDonald, and [that] he’s a bad apple and that he doesn’t belong in the police department and he committed acts that were indefensible”, Herbert has said.
The Chicago cop shot the young man 16 times in October 2014, but he was not even criminally charged until 13 months later.
Jason Van Dyke appeared in Cook County Criminal court Tuesday in Chicago. As Van Dyke left the courthouse December 18, several groups of people shouted profanities and pounded on the black pickup truck he was riding in before it pulled away.
There was also a complaint that Van Dyke used a racial slur during an arrest a few years ago.
The key piece of evidence against Van Dyke undoubtedly will be the dash-cam video showing him shoot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times, the majority of shots fired as the teenager recoiled on the street, helpless.
Protests over the shooting of Laquan McDonald led to the resignation of Chicago’s police chief and a U.S. Department of Justice probe into whether the department use lethal force too often, especially against minorities.
Cleveland police will review the fatal shooting of Rice from start to finish to determine if the two officers involved or others should face disciplinary action, officials said on Tuesday.

Ted Pearson is a leader of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, which advocates for the city to have a civilian police accountability council that isn’t appointed by the mayor.
