Police say a suspect who was armed with a handgun and a knife is in custody in the fatal shooting of an officer at South Carolina mall. Police did not detail any charges against the man and did not take questions at their news conference.
An officer-involved shooting was reported at a suburban South Carolina mall Wednesday morning, and one person was taken to a hospital with injuries.
Alia is survived by his wife, Cassie, and their infant son Sal.
Wilson could not say if the suspicious person was the suspected gunman. “He was an outstanding young man and an outstanding police officer”.
The 32-year-old officer, along with two other cops, had responded to the Richland Mall after a bank employee called in to report a suspicious person sitting in a van. Nearby AC Flora High School was briefly on lockdown as a precaution, but that was quickly lifted once the threat was over.
Forest Acres is the lead investigators, Richland, Columbia and SLED are assisting.
A Columbia police spokeswoman didn’t immediately respond to a message.

Alia, 32, was a seven-year veteran of the police department in Forest Acres, a suburb of Columbia. Sealy said Hall became “uncooperative” and fled from the officers on foot and reportedly ran “through Richland Mall” and to the door of Barnes and Noble bookstore.
