Hamilton confirms that Hutchinson was shot before 1:30 a.m. Monday morning in what appears to be an alteraction that took place in the sergeant’s backyard.
Hutchinson was transported to Round Rock Medical Center, where he died.
Police in Dallas and Baton Rouge have been fatally shot in ambush killings this month by suspects motivated by what they believed to be racial bias in US policing.
We will provide more information as it becomes available. By late morning, some nearby streets had reopened, but a large contingent of police and investigators remained. A SWAT team, DPS Troopers, Pflugerville police and an Air One helicopter are assisting with the search for the suspects.
Hamilton, visibly shaken by the events, spoke fondly about Hutchinson, saying: “This guy was a big teddy bear”.
Jeri Schwartz, a Round Rock resident said, “It makes me want to cry, you know”.
Hutchinson is known for cracking multiple burglary cases across his career with the department.
Hutchinson is a veteran of the police force with 32 years of service, according to Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton.
