The officer, 28-year-old Jacai Colson, was a four-year veteran of the department.

The gunman meant to die in a firefight with police, county police said Monday.

Fraternal Order of Police President John Teletchea said Sunday night that Colson “was a real cops’ cop”.

She said his mother, Lisa, suffered a heart attack after police in Prince George’s County burst into her house to search it after the shooting, and is now at the same hospital as her wounded son. “The First Lady and I send our honest prayers to the family and loved ones of Officer Colson, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his fellow citizens and community”, Hogan said in a statement.

“Police officers run toward disorder”. Maryland officer targeted in deadly shootingPolice say Colson was on his way to the police station to meet an officer and began exchanging gunfire with Ford. But it was also then when Colson was critically shot by friendly fire.

“Police officers run to disorder”.

“They knew in advance, they had every opportunity to seek medical help”.

From surveillance video, investigators determined Michael Ford fired off a magazine and then reloaded his handgun.

“Detective Colson drew fire to himself and in doing so was mortally wounded”, the chief said.

As for the officers involved, they will be listed as victims, Stawinski said, though he said he wasn’t prepared to name the officer whose gun fired the fatal shot.

Colson was pronounced dead at a hospital.

When Michael Ford was shot in the firefighter, officials said his two other brothers took off. Malik Ford was taken into custody at a nearby fast food restaurant a short time later, and Elijah Ford was taken into custody at his home in Landover shortly after his brother.

Anne Marie Lauranzon, director of communications and marketing at Randolph-Macon, says Colson was dedicated not only to the college community, but also to the greater community. Colson, he said, “reacted to protect his fellow police officers and his community”.

Angela Alsobrooks, Prince George’s County state’s attorney, called the shooting an “act of cowardice”.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are helping police in the investigation, spokesmen for the two federal agencies said.

Police said Colson, a four-year veteran who was assigned to the Narcotic Enforcement Division, was undercover. “When you hear something like this it just punches you right in the stomach”, Chichester High School Principal Mike Stankavage said.

Jacai was described as a leader, a role model and a good friend and those who knew him are at a loss over why someone would take a life from someone who was already giving it to so many. “A really respectful kid and just a high-character young man. He treated everyone with respect”. He said he wasn’t surprised when he learned he had become a police officer. Authorities say the suspect wanted to die in a gun battle with officers.
