Two officers on patrol were exiting their vehicle to approach a group of individuals engaged in criminal activity, according to Diane Ruberton, the acting Atlantic County Prosecutor.

At least one of the men in the auto opened fire, Atlantic City police Chief Henry White.

The alleged robbers then opened fire on the two officers.

The struck officer, whose name was not released, was taken to nearby AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. Authorities are seeking help in identifying them.

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

– Bright lights and uniformed officers filled the streets of downtown Atlantic City this morning after one of their own was shot in the line of duty.

Officials say 19-year-old Martell Chisholm and 28-year-old Demetrius Cross are charged with attempted murder, robbery and weapons offenses.

The dead suspect was identified as identified as Jerome Damon, 25, of Camden.

“At this point I don’t know what the reason for the initial stop was”, White said at an early-morning Newsconference.

Prosecutors have released surveillance video of suspects being sought after the shooting of an Atlantic City police officer.

“A sad commentary on the amount of assault weapons so readily available”, Mayor Don Guardian said. The shooting put stores into lockdown for an hour and detoured motorists heading into the resort on the Atlantic City Expressway for the start of the Zac Brown Band beach concert and Labor Day weekend.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit at 609-909-7666 or the Crime Stoppers of Atlantic County at 609-652-1234.
