Officer shot in neck after protecting a father from his son

Officer Kenny Moats of the Maryville Police Department was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on Thursday.

The officer, who was wearing a protective vest, was shot in the neck.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators found a letter at Stalans’ house after the shooting in which he blamed family as well as Blount County authorities “for his problems”. “We ask all people to join in our prayers”.

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp did not reveal the identity of the deceased officer, saying the officer’s family had not yet been notified.

Local law enforcement agencies have stepped up to assist the Maryville Police Department with officers and staff to support their efforts as the department continues to manage and cope with the loss of one of their own.

Authorities say a police officer who was fatally shot in eastern Tennessee was responding to the second domestic disturbance in the same day at the home. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the fund can drop off donations at CBBC Bank or the City of Maryville.

Blount County Sherriff James Berrong said that Brian Keith Stalans, 44, has also been charged with four counts of aggravated assault related to the Thursday shootings, including for allegedly firing a gun into a home occupied by a child younger than 5 years old.

Sheriff’s offices in Loudon and Anderson counties say some of their deputies are in Blount County and Maryville helping patrol.

The suspect complied with officers following the shooting and was taken into custody.

“We live in a great place, and we’re not immune to tragic events like this”, Crisp said. “We have confidence in the judicial system that we have”.
