Gunman Nicholas Glenn died in a shootout with police. The suspect is believed to have acted alone and there’s no indication so far that he had been radicalized.
“We believe this is isolated to this individual”, Ross said while briefing reporters early Saturday morning outside Penn Presbyterian. Glenn was armed with a Ruger pistol with the serial numbers scratched off.
Eventually, two other officers responded to the incident and chased the suspect into an alley. “This is completely a freaky situation”, Philadelphia police Commissioner Richard Ross Jr. said at a press conference Saturday. He said Glenn was well-known to the police department.
Sgt. Sylvia Young of the Philadelphia Police Department was ambushed in her squad vehicle, police said. The woman subsequently succumbed to her wounds in the hospital, and the man is still in critical condition.
Ross referred to the January 7 shooting in Philadelphia of officer Jesse Hartnett, who was ambushed as he sat in his cruiser at an intersection.
“I guess he snapped in prison”, she said. The woman, who was hit seven times, was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m. Saturday, police said. The suspect then passed Maximum Level Lounge, located on the 5100 block of Sansom Street, where he fired about five shots into the bar. The shooter was then arrested and told investigators he “acted in the name of Islam” and “pledged his allegiance” to Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), US media report.
Nicholas Glenn a 25 year old man has been identified as the shooter who Friday evening ambushed Philadelphia Police Sgt Sylvia Young before going on a shooting spree which left three injured and two dead, including the shooter. Glenn was himself killed in an alley close to 48th and Sansom Streets after his deadly shooting rampage.
The commissioner, though, said police have not determined a specific motive for the rampage, other than the general ” ravings” against law enforcement expressed in his letter.
It was the second time this year that a Philadelphia police officer was deliberately targeted by a gunman.
Sergeant Sylvia Young was ambushed as she waited in her auto in West Philadelphia at 11:20pm on Friday. Officer Young was also listed in stable condition. Miller was wounded in action. The suspect fired multiple shots into the vehicle, police say, striking the man in his arm and chest and the woman multiple times in her chest.
Glenn was carrying a white, sealed envelope that read “Doomed People” on it, Ross said.
Officials say two police officers been shot in a confrontation in West Philadelphia.
Fox29 reported that one of the injured officers was a female Philadelphia Police sergeant, while the other was a University of Pennsylvania Police officer.

“This rambling suggests that he clearly was trying to target a police officer, as he did.so it just kind of makes it very clear to us what he was out there to do”, Ross said. Neither officer was identified.
