MyFoxBoston.com reported that 20-month-old Colton Guay died Monday after visiting the petting zoo at the Oxford County Fair in Maine, where he was infected with the bacteria E. coli. He believes his son was exposed to the bacteria at the Oxford County Fair. The bacteria led to several seizures that caused his brain to shut down.

Fair officials said Tuesday a state veterinarian will investigate the health of its animals.

“I have learned that there is no pain worse than losing the life of your childs [sic]”, he wrote.

Mr Guay said he and Colton’s mother Beth were by is side in the hospital and got to “rock him to sleep”.

The fair, which these two families visited, was organized from September 16 to 19.

He said tests showed the presences of toxins associated with E. coli.

“As the agricultural fair season winds down, it’s important that those who are exposed to animals and their environment wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water”, a CDC spokesman said in a statement. Walsh said the office ensures the fairs have plenty of visible signage reminding people to wash their hands if they do come into contact with animals. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. As children already have a weaker and less developed immune system, they are more vulnerable to death. “This offers the best protection against E. coli”.
