Officials’ mistake lets CMU stun Oklahoma State on last play

Central Michigan defensive back Sean Bunting, right, watches as Oklahoma State running back Chris Carson gets airborn after jumping over him during an NCAA college football game in Stillwater, Okla., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2016. The Cowboys rightfully had the game won.

Okay, I made that part up about the Chippewas being named the Punks, but that just goes to show how big an upset this was because you probably weren’t going to know Central Michigan’s mascot until I told you. That’s the rule. There’s an exception to the rule that says if enforcement of the foul involves a loss of down, then that brings the game to an end. Although, the officials conferred and ultimately chose to assess an intentional grounding penalty, which allowed Central Michigan another play at midfield. On the final play of the game, CMU quarterback Cooper Rush tossed a 42-yard strike in traffic to receiver Jesse Kroll.

Oklahoma State regained the lead on the next possession.

Q: So what you’re saying is that the game should have ended and it should not have been Central Michigan’s ball, just to be clear.

Rush, like many watching in the stadium and at home on television, thought the game was over.

“Despite the error, this will not change the outcome of the contest”, Bill Carollo, the NCAA’s coordinator of football officials, said in a statement released by the MAC.

The game was scheduled years ahead of Frost’s hiring over the offseason, but that still didn’t prevent many MI fans from relishing at the opportunity to get back at Frost for what they felt was too much politicking almost 20 years ago.

No. 5 MI 51, UCF 14 – At Ann Arbor, Mich.: Wilton Speight threw two of his four touchdown passes to Jake Butt, and Khalid Hill ran for two scores in Michigan’s victory over Central Florida. “The final score shows that Oklahoma State lost the game but that doesn’t mean that I have to agree with it”.

“In that situation we’re telling our guys to never go down with the ball – it’s touchdown or turnover there – so he alertly found Corey Willis who was in the trail position there, and Corey did the rest”. A fumbled punt return by McKenzie inside the Georgia 10 set up a late Nicholls touchdown on Fourcade’s 6-yard pass to C.J. Bates, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to two points.

Grant resurrected a stunned Rutgers (1-1) from a 14-0 first quarter deficit with an 84-yard kickoff return, and he was in the center of a 21-point third quarter with touchdown runs of 58 and 21 yards.

Oklahoma State rolled out to a 14-0 lead in just the first quarter which made it seem early on as if the Cowboys were on their way to a 2-0 start to the season.

(19) MISSISSIPPI 38, WOFFORD 13: Chad Kelly threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns to help the Rebels (1-1) rout the Terriers (1-1) in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 21-0 lead on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Speight to Butt with 8:48 remaining in the first quarter, a 2-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Khalid Hill with 3:29 left and a 55-yard touchdown pass from Speight to Darboh with 1:55 to go in the first quarter.

(10) Wisconsin 54, Akron 10: In Madison, Wis., Corey Clement ran for two scores before leaving with an injury, Jazz Peavy had two touchdown catches for the Badgers (2-0).

Freshman quarterback Shane Buechele passed for 244 yards and four touchdowns and No. 11 Texas backed up its first national ranking since 2013 with a 41-7 victory over UTEP in Austin, Texas.

The incredibly insane and controversial play gave Central Michigan a 30-27 win, but is it a decisive victory?
