Oft-injured Victor Cruz not giving up on playing for Giants

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz missed another practice yesterday which is nearly becoming the norm for Cruz since suffering a torn patella tendon in 2014. There are only a half-dozen or so practices left before the team needs to trim its roster to 53 players for Week 1, and McAdoo said on Monday that the team has yet to see enough from Cruz on the field to fully evaluate him.

In a radio interview last week, general manager Jerry Reese said he wanted Cruz to play in two preseason games to gauge his progress.

Cruz, 29, said he requested to speak with Giants coach Ben McAdoo three days ago, just to make sure the player and coach were on the same page regarding his status.

“Victor and I had a nice conversation yesterday afternoon, and we talked about some different things that may be able to help …” “I’ll keep our conversation private. I just want to listen to my body and go about things the right way”, Cruz said Wednesday.

All of this came after a “needed” conversation between Cruz and McAdoo on Sunday, when the receiver explained to the coach where he was at both physically and mentally.

“Obviously. I am a normal human being, so I think about that stuff, but all I can do is take care of what I can take care of and control what I can control and that is my health and being out there when I can”, he said.

Cruz was injured last week and did not play in the preseason opener on Friday.

The Giants have off Tuesday and McAdoo said it was too early to say whether Cruz would be ready for Saturday’s game in Buffalo against the Bills.

“We’re still early in the week, so we’re going to take it day by day”, McAdoo added.

Despite missing yet another practice on Wednesday, Cruz was optimistic, saying “today is a better day”. I’m not trying to eye any specific number.

Cruz said they ramped up his work on Wednesday. “I just want to play”.

Cruz said he is getting plenty of support at home and from the Giants, so he is not hanging my head low. “Just to let him know where I was mentally, because a lot of it is just between the training staff and they report to him [on] injuries …” “He got to do a little bit more today than he has”.
