Ohio Department of Health now testing for Zika virus in its lab
The areas with the highest risk of Zika transmission are in south Texas and Florida – particularly, places like Miami, which has both the right climate for the mosquitoes to breed and an influx of travelers from Zika-affected areas, the researchers reported today (March 16) in the journal PLOS Currents Outbreaks.

Recent U.S. outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya – carried by the same mosquito – suggest any Zika outbreaks may be relatively small, said Dr. Lyle Petersen of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The agency’s center for veterinary medicine said it found no significant impact for the trial of a method meant to reduce populations of that mosquito that spreads Zika. “The Department of Health will continue to be in constant contact with all health officials across our state to keep all Floridians safe”.
Zika virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Go to the ODH website at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/zika for more information about Zika virus. To date, Zika virus has not been confirmed in any state resident. The Florida Department of Health told us there are 60 Zika cases in Florida, four of them involving pregnant women.
Arkoosh said the county, coordinating with the state health department and the CDC, has had time to prepare for cases of Zika virus in the months leading up to mosquito season.
First case of the Zika virus was reported in Cuba where the virus was contracted within the country, Cuba’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
Public health officials are especially concerned about a potential link between the virus and a rare but serious birth defect called microcephaly.
Dr. Irma Asuncion, head of the DOH Epidemiology Bureau, defined suspected cases as patients with three major symptoms-fever, conjunctivitis and skin rash-plus any of the following that can not be explained by other medical conditions: headache, myalgia or muscle pain, malaise, joint pain, retro-orbital pain or pain that occurs behind the orbit of the eye.
Thousands of pregnant women caught in an ongoing outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus spreading from Brazil risk having a baby with the birth defect microcephaly, according to the results of a new study.
Commissioner Nominee, Dr Michelle Davis stressed the importance of individual actions that everyone can take to help prevent the zika virus in the USVI. Over the course of the outbreak, eight cases of microcephaly were identified.

He said the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with other non-health sectors, has formulated a National Zika Plan which will give guidance on actions to be taken. The mosquitoes that transmit Zika could also be slightly different from one area to the next.
