Ohio Early Voting: US Supreme Court Nixes Dems ‘Golden Week’

In Ohio, a federal judge ruled in May that reducing the early voting period would have a discriminatory effect on black voters, and he ordered the state to open the polls five weeks before election day.

If you didn’t, there’s still plenty of time to do something about it.

Numerous boards took Woodhouse’s advice: as the N&O reported earlier this month, twenty-three county boards voted to reduce early voting hours from 2012, and nine that had Sunday voting in 2012 cut that out altogether.

There is no deadline to register to vote. If you register in person, you can vote at the same time starting September 26.

With a referendum threatened against those 2012 changes, lawmakers repealed it.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down a plea from Ohio Democrats to stay a lower court decision and add more early voting days in the presidential battleground state.

That could change, pending court intervention.

Proponents said the change was needed to give county election officials time to verify voters’ eligibility before they cast ballots and to reduce potential voter fraud.

There have been a couple of different court decisions on that issue.

The Ohio Democratic Party had sued Ohio Secretary of State John Husted after the elimination of what was known as “golden week” when Ohioans could both register and cast ballots at the same time.

There were no dissenters listed in the one-sentence notice. Who voted out of precinct?

The ruling affirmed Marbley’s rejection of absentee-ballot requirements for birthdate and address entries as presenting an undue burden on voters, saying OH could provide no justification for its precise standard. Rick Snyder signed a measure passed hurriedly through the Republican-controlled Legislature to forbid straight-ticket voting. “It is the very act of voting”, Schuette said. 7, ballots will be sent to voters at the address specified on their applications.

Any voter who misses two years of elections, or who has updated his or her address with the post office but not a county board of elections, is mailed a notice asking them to confirm their new address or whether they’d like to remain a registered voter.

And in Georgia, a coalition of civil rights groups went to court Wednesday challenging the state’s voter registration rules. Republicans, however, say early voting is still more robust in OH than most states. “Over the last two presidential elections alone, tens of thousands of Ohioans have counted on the Golden Week to register to vote and cast their ballots”.

CNN reports that OH lawyers argued that even without Golden Week voting procedures, OH still has some of the most lenient and flexible early voting provisions in the country.
