Authorities say a New Mexico police officer has died after being shot in the neck during a traffic stop, and three suspects are in custody.
Chavez was a two-year veteran of the Hatch Police Department and a graduate of the Doña Ana County Sheriff Department’s Cadet Program.
A man accused of aggravated murder in OH has been arrested in southern New Mexico for allegedly shooting and killing a local police officer during a traffic stop, officials said on Saturday.
After the shooting, Hanes fled the scene in a Lexus that was seen racing on the highway at speeds above 100 miles per hour, the sheriff’s department said. Their names haven’t been released.
The suspect had a gunshot wound to the right thigh which appeared to be self-inflicted, she said.
The investigation is ongoing, Jameson said in the statement.
Hanes crashed the stolen Cruze into a pile of firewood at a residence where he was surrounded by police. The condition of the driver is now unknown.
FBI investigators were in Las Cruces on Saturday helping to process evidence, Sheriff Enrique “Kiki” Vigil said.
Officials said Saturday they will make sure to follow the judicial process and were “not going to allow these folks to get away”.
Nelson and another man – who told police he was picked up by Nelson and Hanes while hitchhiking – were located and detained shortly thereafter.
Hanes and Nelson are wanted by authorities in OH in connection with the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old man on July 25, Ohio’s Chillicothe Gazette reported.
Jameson said she doesn’t know why Chavez initiated the stop.
“There’s a total of eight (officers) out there”.
Vigil said sheriff’s officers would handle all calls in Hatch for the next few days, and that the sheriff’s chaplain has been made available to those grieving officers.
Hanes was 16 and living in Columbus when he pleaded guilty in 1995 to involuntary manslaughter and other charges.
Nelson, who also goes by “JD”, has a string of drug-related convictions in central OH dating back to the mid-1990s.
