Ohio State beats Notre Dame in Fiesta Bowl
Ohio State finished the season with a record of 12-1 while Notre Dame finished the season 10-3.

Eventually, the pile of losses was bound to catch up to the No. 8 Fighting Irish, and they finally found their breaking point against No. 7 Ohio State on Friday in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl.
Ohio State came out of the gate quickly, forcing three-and-outs on Notre Dame’s first two possessions and scoring two touchdowns of their own to put the Irish in an early 14-0 hole less than eight minutes into the game.
They just couldn’t keep up with the blistering Buckeyes after a string of injuries, including do-everything linebacker Jaylon Smith to a knee injury in the first quarter. The so-called failure of 2015 includes a 12-1 record, almost-certain final top-5 ranking and back-to-back victories over MI and Notre Dame.
The problems for the Irish began early in the week, when sophomore Daniel Cage suffered an ankle injury that did not keep him from playing but significantly limited his snaps.
“We haven’t lost to Notre Dame in about, probably ever”, Borman said.
Safety Max Redfield and defensive tackle Jerry Tillery were suspended for the game due to violations of team rules.
“To have those two guys healthy, it’s minimizing the need to rotate Isaac Rochell inside”. Day, with his foot taped, joined them in the starting lineup.
Maybe Warinner moving upstairs with Barrett as the quarterback was only a small part of the turnaround.
But on that play, OSU defensive end Joey Bosa – the projected No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft – was called for a personal-foul targeting penalty, which wiped out the INT and, more importantly, kicked Bosa out of the game.
“I would say schematically, they do a great job of creating challenging situations with changing numbers and unique plays”, Irish graduate student linebacker Joe Schmidt said.
Elliott scored his first touchdown on a 2-yard run, and after a Notre Dame three-and-out, Barrett completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Thomas with 7:41 left in the quarter.
Kizer connected with Chris Brown on a 4-yard touchdown pass to open the second half, pulling the Irish within a touchdown. “Certainly the guy that is so impactful”, Kelly said of Smith.
If Ohio State played Michigan State 10 times, they’d probably win at least seven of them and the Buckeyes had to be kicking themselves when they watched the Spartans get boat-raced against an Alabama team they beat in the semifinals past year. We had a lot of momentum.
One of the few bright spots for the Irish was Trumbetti, who filled in for Cage and tied career highs in tackles (four) and sacks (one), while setting a new career best in tackles for loss (two). “I think it would have been a completely different story if we had brought that intensity and that chip every single week, but…”

But Elliott made sure the Buckeyes didn’t lose their intensity after Bosa’s departure. Brian Kelly should feel good knowing he has two solid quarterbacks that can lead his team. At times … he can go. “But in the end it just mattered what we thought of ourselves”. All of a sudden, Notre Dame just needed to get a stop. It was the players on the other side of the ball. “With that I felt like I was at a really good place with where my game”. Fuller hugged him. Day hugged him. And once the team made it back to the locker room, head coach Urban Meyer broke out some popular dance moves-“Ran Off Da Plug Twice” and “The Dab”-with his teammates”.
