Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett loses scholarship for semester after OVI arrest

Urban Meyer didn’t believe what he saw, didn’t want to believe what he saw when he looked at the text message on his phone around 6 o’clock Saturday morning.

“Am I reading this right?” he asked. Meyer promised that Barrett will have the opportunity to gain his scholarship back though.

Records show a morning arraignment set for Friday in Franklin County Municipal Court in Columbus. In Ohio, those younger than 21 are considered to be impaired if they are above 0.02. Meyer said Monday that Braxton Miller, who switched positions from quarterback to H-back before the season, will be the No. 2 QB vs. the Golden Gophers. Unfortunately for Barrett, the Buckeyes were on a bye week, and he made a very poor mistake that night when he was pulled over, with a blood-alcohol level of.099, and was given an OVI citation.

Warinner said Barrett still has the backing of the team. Meyer added Barrett came to his house.

“I love J.T.”, Meyer said. This means that Barrett will lose his summer aid. Barrett’s family will have to cover the cost of a semester in Columbus.

Beyond Minnesota, Meyer said he hasn’t given the identity of the starting quarterback too much thought. Barrett was cited for driving a vehicle while intoxicated. He also said Barrett will undergo counseling through the university.

Barrett will sit out this week when the top-ranked Buckeyes play Minnesota at home. “He’s like a child to me”. “He’s one of my favorite guys I’ve ever got to coach”.

OSU redshirt sophomore quarterback J.T. Barrett (16) runs with the ball during a game against Rutgers on October 24 at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway Township, NJ.

“If he’s good enough or earns that right”, he said. Now there is a few question about who you are…. “Now there are questions (about) who you are”. We’re just going to have to move on, get Cardale in there and get him ready this week. “I’m not OK with it, but I’m going to forgive him”.

Offensive coordinator Ed Warinner also is confident Miller could play quarterback if necessary, even after two shoulder surgeries. Cardale Jones will start at quarterback, just like he did in Ohio State’s first seven games this season, all of which ended in Buckeye wins.
