An Ohio father was arrested after a cable installer found the “badly decomposed” body of a child inside a crib at an apartment complex, police said Wednesday. An autopsy was planned to determine how she died.
Warfel and his ex-wife allegedly lost another daughter in March 2013 whose death was listed as a “sudden unexplained infant death” with the manner undetermined, according to NBC’s West Palm Beach Affiliate WPTV.
During Eric Warfel’s court appearance on Thursday, the judge said Ember died on or about June 18. She now lives in New York, Berarducci said. According to the statement read by Leggett, Warfel did not call for emergency help or notify the police of his daughter’s death. There are numerous references in the divorce decree to her substance abuse problems.
The Cuyahoga County Department of Job and Family Services removed the 7-year-old from their home before the divorce and allowed her to live with Warfel’s parents.
Warfel was granted sole custody of the toddler during a divorce past year.
Northeast Ohio Media Group reached out to the girl’s grandparents, who declined to comment.
The child’s mother did not seek any parenting rights beyond limited visitations.
Warfel admitted to authorities that he threw trash into the child’s bedroom to disguise the smell of her decomposing body. Police on Thursday raided a Middleburg Heights hotel room where they found what they believe is cocaine and an electronic communication device belonging to Warfel.

The investigation indicates the child had been dead for several weeks and Warfel hid the news from family members.
