Ohioans drop off 13.5 tons of unused prescription drugs

Police say rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Chief Raymond Hite, Jr. said that the Take-Back Day was a tremendous success locally as his department collected over 50 pounds of prescription drugs.

The Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010 allows the DEA to develop methods for disposing prescription and controlled-substance medications.

Gov. Shumlin said, “Prescription drugs that fall into the wrong hands, on objective or by accident, can help fuel addiction, crime and in a few cases the loss of life”.

“We thank those who safely disposed of their medications on Saturday for playing a role in preventing abuse and addiction”.

Previous drug take back days in Vermont have yielded as much as 3,000 pounds of unused prescriptions, about half of this year’s haul.

Saturday, September 26, was National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and Van Wert and Ohio residents took part in the national day by taking their unwanted prescription drugs to designated locations around the state.

Ohioans got rid of 13.5 tons of prescription drugs last weekend
