“I’m focusing on playing well and when I have the chance I’ll show what I can do, because I know what I can do and it’s a lot for this team”. I don’t care what their name is.
Nigeria captain Mikel Obi, who is yet to play under new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, was once again left out of the matchday squad despite several changes. “There are three days before the game and they have the opportunity to convince me to put them in”, Conte said after the game.
“Cesc is Chelsea’s player, I am happy about him, for his attitude and his behaviour during training sessions”, the ex-Juventus coach told a post-match news conference. I know when I have to press, I choose my game much better overall.
Chelsea face Fabregas’ former club Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with the Spanish worldwide hoping to make his first league start of the season.
With a return to goal-scoring form in midweek, the former Barcelona ace will hope that it’s just the start of things to come.
Chelsea began well enough, with Pedro having an effort ruled out for offside, but their defensive weaknesses were exposed when Okazaki headed in the opener from a tight angle after debutant Marcos Alonso and Azilicueta both failed to clear their lines.
Chelsea pulled one back at the stroke of half time through Gary Cahill.
Cesar Azpilicueta levelled the game soon after the interval with a stunning strike from just outside the penalty area before Marcin Wasilewski was sent off for the hosts in the last minute of normal time.
‘I spoke with Conte. “It’s very important for me to keep going”.
“I think the key was when we conceded a goal from the last corner of the first half”, he said, via the club’s website. Reading won 2-1 away against Brighton & Hove Albion, while Leeds United beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0.
Fabregas scored twice in extra time to complete Chelsea’s comeback and seal a 4-2 win after they had been two goals down inside 35 minutes.
