Ole Miss DT Nkemdiche charged with possession of marijuana

Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche’s status for the Sugar Bowl remains uncertain after being charged with possession of marijuana Monday by the Atlanta Police Department, coach Hugh Freeze said Monday afternoon.

According to the police report, Atlanta police found at least seven marijuana cigarettes rolled in blunt papers when they searched the hotel room after the accident.

Robert Nkemdiche’s status for the Sugar Bowl, like his status with Atlanta police, is developing.

At least it seemed that way earlier in the year, but Nkemdiche was recently charged with marijuana possession after falling from a hotel window.

Police say their investigation is continuing. The report adds that “it appears that the victim broke the window and then walked approximately 15 feet and climbed over a wall and fell approximately 15 feet”.

A junior, Nkemdiche is expected to be one of the top picks in the National Football League draft next year if he decides to go pro. Freeze asked him what other issues he was talking about and the reporter brought up the 2014 incident where both Nkemdiche brothers were sued by another Ole Miss student after he was attacked at an Ole Miss fraternity party.

“Sometimes when bad things happen, there’s some silver linings”, Freeze said of Nkemdiche’s injuries. “I haven’t even had a chance to visit with him [in person]”. Freeze said, “No, obviously I haven’t helped them enough”. He said Nkemdiche will first undergo evaluations from their doctors before a decision can be made.

Freeze has not had an opportunity to watch a lot of film on the Cowboys (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) but has seen enough of them to know how risky they are in the passing game, comparing them to Texas A&M in the way they orchestrate their offense. “I’m disappointed to hear he was in that situation, but I don’t know all the facts yet”.

“When you and I grew up, we made our mistakes, and they weren’t on the front page of everything”, Freeze said.

“I think the charges are a misdemeanor”, Freeze said.
