Olympic flag handed over to Tokyo for 2020 Games

The USA’s Rio tally helped them achieve two notable historical milestones as they passed 1,000 golds and 2,500 Olympic medals overall. The grand sports event ended with an official handover to Tokyo for 2020.

Governor Yuriko Koike accepted the flag towards the end of the 2016 Rio Olympics closing ceremony at the Maracana Stadium here on Sunday, reports Sputnik.

The colourful ceremony, lasting nearly three hours, celebrated Brazil’s arts and was held in a wet Maracana.

Among the highlights were Tokyo’s impressive showcase and a vibrant carnival parade.

One of the biggest cheers of the night came when Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appeared dressed as computer game character Super Mario, rising out of a huge green pipe in the stadium.

“These were a marvellous Olympics, in a marvellous city”, International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said.

The 2016 Rio Olympics closing ceremony garnered billions of viewers from around the world.

The Olympic flame was dowsed by a rain shower.

Team USA dominated the medal count in Rio winning 121 medals including 46 golds. The American athletes also got 37 silver medals and 38 bronze medals.

Despite our small size, Bermuda fielded a team of eight world class athletes at the 2016 Games, with the island being represented by more athletes than over a dozen larger nations. China was second with 70 medals including 26 gold.
