The 28-year-old from Bolton won his Keirin heat to advance to the second round, effectively a semi-final, but Callum Skinner was eliminated after being relegated from his repechage heat for impeding a rival rider.
Just 100 giddying laps of the track – punctuated by occasional mad dash sprints – stood between her and a return trip to the podium.
There were also medals last night for Becky James and Katy Marchant, who won silver and bronze in the women’s sprint finals, bringing Team GB’s medal tally in the cycling arena to 11 with six golds, four silvers and one bronze.
While Kenny’s post-ride reaction was calm and measured – he said it all felt a bit “surreal” – Trott could not hold back the tears after her own exploits and when watching her partner rocket to gold.
“Out there with all the cameras and snappers saying “do this, do that” that’s a special kind of hell for me”.
Their relationship first came to light once the London 2012 track competition had finished, when they were pictured with Prince Harry and then David Beckham at the beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade.
“In the next couple of months I’ll be getting married and settling down, so I’ll make a decision and see if I want to even do another one”, he added.
Trott and Kenny declined to confirm the details for their wedding, not even the date, with initial suggestions it would take place in September.
After Laura won her final race, the pair kept their celebrations under wraps as Jason was moments away from hitting the track to bag another gold.
French sprint coach Laurent Gané said: “The recipe should be asked for from our neighbours because I don’t understand”.
“It just seems mad to me, honestly”, she said.
At Rio alone, Kenny has won three golds and Trott two. You step up to the world championships the year after and you’re back to your non-Olympic kit and equipment and you get your feet slammed back on the ground, I guess.
Trott also joked on Twitter about becoming a mother, writing: “Our kids have to get some of these genes right?!”
So when we got the chance to sit down with Laura Trott herself in Rio today, we thought we’d try to get to the nub of the issue. “And look what I have just done”, she added.
‘If they were both like Jason, God only knows how they’d talk about anything.
Earlier Giles Scott made sure Britain kept its monopoly in sailing’s Finn class with another gold. Kenny said: “I was there in Beijing when Chris Hoy rocketed to stardom”. Because he goes through the same things I do, it’s great he knows how to deal with it – he knows what to say.
