“We hadn’t been advised the fire alarms were silenced, so how we found out was basically smoke”, Australia’s Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller said. I have two brothers, I don’t know what they will look like now as we were separated when we were small.

But she added: “We have reminded all our team members, especially in the village, that you keep your doors locked – your bedroom door and the apartment door”.

The fire follows last week’s serious issues with the building which forced the Australian team to temporarily move out.

The Australian delegation, preparing to compete in the Games that start August 5 in Rio de Janeiro, went into the street until given the all clear.

Brazilian interim President Michel Temer on Saturday inaugurated a new Rio de Janeiro metro line that runs from Barra da Tijuca, the neighborhood that is home to most of the Olympic venues, to the city’s southern tourist zone. About 100 athletes and officials evacuated the complex for about 30 minutes while firefighters put the blaze out, and nobody was injured.

Ten refugees, including Yusra, will participate in the Rio Olympic Games under the Olympic flag as the International Olympic Committee formed the unique team for athletes that have fled conflict-riven countries and regions, reports Xinhua.

Chiller said she did not question the three people as she believed they had been gifted the shirts as a thank you.

Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic team, Kitty Chiller, blamed the incident on a lit cigarette, which had been thrown on rubbish left by staff and contractors in the vehicle park.

“It was just really, of all the 31 buildings, it had to be building 23 after everything that has happened”, Chiller said.

Chiller complained last weekend about exposed wiring and blocked toilets, saying the accommodation was “not safe or ready” for athletes who were put up in hotels while contractors rectified matters.

“We’ve now absolutely insisted that that fire alarm system is never deactivated again”, said Chiller.

Mardini, who has now settled in Germany with her family, says she will proudly represent Syria, the Olympic movement and her recently adopted homeland when she competes in Brazil. The team refused to move in last weekend after finding unsafe wiring and blocked toilets in the building.
