Franklin endured another stunning disappointment today when she finished last in her semi-final heat with only the 13th-fastest time among 16 swimmers.
Ledecky won gold in her only London race quite an accomplishment for a 15-year-old but her triumph was dwarfed by Franklin’s long shadow.
He’s still got three individual events, and will surely swim two more relays.
Katie Ledecky’s first Olympics were the 2012 summer games in London. By the time Ledecky leaves Rio, there’s a good chance that she’ll have bested herself. again.
Ledecky will have to put it all together Tuesday night as Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, who entered the Games with the top time in the world since 2015, was 0.16 seconds faster than Ledecky in a semifinal heat.
“I wish I could tell you”, Franklin said to ESPN when asked what went wrong.
“I probably got to sleep at 3:00 am and was on an 11:00 am bus, so quick turnarounds”, Phelps said.
Ledecky arguably outdid her compatriot, however, by shattering the world record to win the 400m freestyle, the first American gold medal in the pool at Rio 2016. Since the 19-year-old has smashed her own world record on multiple occasions, it’s unclear whether to count those once, or twice, or even three times.
Ledecky already owns two medals and one world record in Rio.
Italy’s Federica Pellegrini did it twice, in the era of the now-banned supersuits. The gold medalist, who was a standout at the 2012 Olympic Games, shockingly finished 13th out of 16 swimmers in the 200-meter freestyle semifinal on August 8. She beat Great Britain’s Jazz Carlin by nearly five seconds while teammate Leah Smith won the bronze medal.
Ledecky’s USA teammate Leah Smith claimed the bronze with 4:01.92.
In what she called the hardest swim of the week, Ledecky swam a preliminary time of 1 minute, 55.01 seconds but improved her time with a 1:54.81 night swim. “It just felt great”.
“Coming off the wall I thought my kickout was great”, Phelps said. “It was only a matter of how fast she was going to go”.

Ledecky anchored the 4×100 free team that set a U.S. record and earned silver behind Australia on Sunday. Plus, she set world records in the 800m and 1500m, earning gold medals in both.
