Rio organisers had initially planned to sell up to 7.5 million event tickets, but later pared back their estimate to closer to six million, citing factors including space limitations at event venues.

Armed soldiers stood patrol on highways and on many corners throughout the iconic beach city in Brazil’s largest security operation ever. There have been threats of police strikes on the eve of the games.

The well-spoken California University student of International Business said she feels in good shape to lower her 1:07.06 record and the Olympics Games will provide a good opportunity for her to meet her target.

A police chief leading the operation was shot in the shoulder amid the gun fight, local media reported.

The clash, which came a day after anti-torch protests in nearby towns and amid several days of gang violence in northern Brazil, underscored social tension in the massive country.

Brazil embarked on its Olympics bid at a time of prosperity in 2006, but the games are opening with the country in the grip of its worst recession in decades.

“The Olympics is a waste of time”.

The Olympic torch has arrived in Rio de Janeiro by boat after a three-month tour of Brazilian cities.

According to Canada’s Own the Podium organization, 21 athletes won a medal in their particular sport in recent world championship competitions, while only 17 did so before the London Olympics in 2012. “I think we have about 11 players who are competing in their first Olympics, which is a huge turnaround, but I also think that those players bring experience, they’ve been around this team, they’ve earned quite a few a caps with the team and are doing very well”.

The result means South Africa have yet to win an Olympic football match in their four finals appearances.

They include perennial tennis stars Serena Williams and Venus Williams, and the powerhouse US women’s soccer team that features Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo, among others.
