Olympics-Canada beat Brazil 2-1 to take women’s bronze

The second day of the two-day Olympic decathlon gets underway with Londoner Damian Warner sitting in third place.

Warner finished the 10-discipline competition on Thursday with a total of 8,666 points. U.S. won the gold medal in the event at the 2012 Olympics.

Defending champion Ashton Eaton of the USA won gold with 8,893 points while France’s Kevin Mayer took silver with 8,834 points.

The anchor runner, De Grasse, won his third medal of the 2016 Games, the first time a Canadian has won three medals in the sprint events at a single Games.

Team Jamaica, which was anchored by Usain Bolt, won the gold medal for a third straight time after being clocked in 37.27 and Japan captured the silver.

The Reds also defeated Australia (No. 5), Germany (No. 2) and France (No. 3) earlier in the tournament en route to reaching the bronze medal game.

Diver Meaghan Benfeito landed on the podium for the second time in Brazil as she claimed bronze in the women’s 10-metre platform.

At the Olympic Golf Course, Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., survived an up-and-down opening round, carding a 1-under-par 70 that included a pair of double bogeys and an eagle.

She made her move in the second round after five consecutive birdies to move into a tie for third.

Melissa Bishop of Eganville, Ont., qualified for the semifinal with the best time in the women’s 800-metre heats of one minute 58.38 seconds.

The semifinals are Wednesday with the final set for Thursday night.

Phil Edwards and Alex Wilson were the last Canadians to win three track medals at one Olympics at the 1932 Los Angeles Games.

Cochrane and Fournel were nominated to the Canadian Olympic Team just over two weeks ago after a Russian crew was suspended due to a doping infraction.

Canada will be well represented in the semifinals of the men’s 1,500 metres. The team was disqualified at both the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 relay championships.

The relay team, Akeem Haynes, Aaron Brown, Brendon Rodney and Andre De Grasse, finished posted a time of 37.64.

Farah Jacques of Gatineau, Que., Toronto’s Crystal Emmanuel, Phylicia George of Markham, Ont., and Khamica Bingham of Brampton, Ont., finished seventh in the women’s 4×100 relay in 43.15.

In men’s shot put, Tim Nedow of Brockville, Ont., finished 16th in qualifying and did not advance.

Alyxandria Treasure of Prince George, B.C., qualified for Saturday’s high jump final with a personal-best effort of 1.93 metres.
