The Olympics begin on Friday in Rio de Janeiro, the first time that the Games have been hosted in South America.

It’s no surprise, then, that the defending World Cup champions and defending gold medal winners will arrive for Rio 2016 as the prohibitive favorites to win yet another big tournament.

France and Colombia are also in the USA’s group and if the Americans are able to show the same kind of form they produced in the latter stages of last summer’s Women’s World Cup, they may prove impossible to stop.

The second game in Group A takes place later on Wednesday when home side Brazil, seeking their first Olympic gold after two silver medal performances, take on China.

In the 25 years since the United States won its first women’s World Cup, all they have done is captivate audiences by winning three World Cups and narrowly and devastatingly losing a fourth in 2011 to the same Japanese team they conquered in 2015. Press, a Chadwick School alumnus, and Engen, a former Peninsula High School standout, will be playing in their first Olympics, although Press was an alternate in 2012. Amadine Henry, Wendie Renard and Eugénie Le Sommer were all FIFPro World XI selections a year ago and Elodie Thomis is one of the fastest players you’ll ever see. She has garnered plenty of awards for her impressive play, including Gatorade player of the year, Young soccer player of the year, and Youth player of the year. She has signed a letter of intent to accept an athletic scholarship from UCLA.

The U.S. dominated from the start to earn the convincing victory and remain unbeaten in 2016, with 14 shutouts and only one draw in 16 games.

In this context, the New Zealand Way initiative helped transform perceptions of the country by building a destination brand for outdoor sports and tourism, in part, by leveraging the hosting of events like the 1987 Rugby World Cup and the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand is 1-3-3 in its last seven games, has been outscored, 7-3, and been shut out four times.

Women’s Olympic soccer, which is contested by full national teams without age restriction, is considered one of the sport’s top tournaments. The US beat New Zealand handily 4-0 earlier this year in a friendly.

This time around? The questions have been far less about what the USWNT will do without Rapinoe, and far more about whether they should have brought another, fully fit player due to the compressed rosters required (for some reason) by the Olympics. Two players are unattached. Like Brazil today, New Zealand was in the midst of a hard economic climate during much of the 1970s and 1980s, partly caused by the country’s loss of preferred-trading status with Britain and the Commonwealth. Forward Rosie White played at UCLA from 2011-2014.

Every women’s football team has come with the same mindset and the same goal, and that’s to win the gold medal. Instead of just lumping it forward over the back line – which we’re still going to do sometimes – how else can we get into that final third? “I know that sounds pretty bold but that just really is what our team is about”. It is not going to be easy.
