That’s definitely the understatement of the year, given that Team U.S.A. finished a whole 2.47 seconds faster than Great Britain, who won the silver.
Two other Longhorns will receive medals as a result of the relay win, as Jack Conger and Clark Smith both participated in the prelims.
Haas was the second man in the pool for Team USA, finishing with a time of 1:44.14, faster than anyone else in the race by.71 seconds and the fifth-fastest 200-meter split of all-time. Conger swam the fastest leg in the prelims, while Smith is a second-generation Texas swimmer and Olympian.
Tuesday marked the eighth consecutive Olympics in which at least one Texas men’s swimmer represented the United States in the 800-meter freestyle relay.
The finish added to Phelps’ gold medal count, giving him 21 for his legendary career.
