Lochte, the 12-time medalist whose Rio Olympics ended Thursday night with a disappointing fifth-place swim in the 200-meter individual medley, declined to announce his retirement Friday.
“He said he’s going to retire after 2012 and I was the only one that said he’d come back”, Lochte said in a press conference Friday afternoon in Rio.
At 31, and with a bevy of younger swimmers eager to claim a victory over a hero, Phelps’ prospects in Rio were unclear.
“I don’t know how to wrap my head around that”, Phelps said. “And I’m going say it again that he’s going to come back for 2020”. “I’ve been planning as we’ve been leading up to this so I think I have the wedding in order, and now it’s onto the party”.
Murphy extended American dominance of the backstroke events, which goes back to 1992.
