Olympics-Russian Stepanova will not appeal over Rio ban

The news of the failed test comes just hours before the opening ceremony to an Olympics which has so far been overshadowed by doping.

The entire Russian team avoided a complete ban over allegations that its government and security services covered up widespread doping.

The Independent Panel of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled on Thursday to allow Russian swimmers Nikita Lobintsev and Vladimir Morozov to participate in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Jack Robertson, the chief investigator for the probe of Russia’s track team, told Pro Publica that WADA president Craig Reedie “had to be literally pressured into every investigation”.

Addressing the media after the International Olympic Committee session on Thursday, Bach said that the hard question of the consequences for the athletes had to be addressed, and that a fair decision had to be made so that he could look into the eyes of the athletes. “We are grateful to the International Olympic Committee for such a decision”.

Neither the athlete nor the sport is expected to be officially announced until the B-sample is tested.
