Olympics: Wild finish costs U.S.’s Felix gold in women’s 400

Felix, 30, was favourite to win but Miller, 22, was out for revenge after finishing second behind the American at the world championships in Beijing a year ago. “It’s a little bittersweet now”, the L.A. native told Us Weekly and other reporters of the historic but heartbreaking finish.

Miller started off strong, exploding out of the blocks in lane seven, her long stride enabling her to establish a good lead on the back straight.

Miller’s dive sparked a lot of mixed reactions. Because it’s remarkable without doing something historic like setting a new world record or winning more gold medals than anyone else. Maybe it was more of a tumble than a dive, but what matters is the end result: Her shoulder crossed the finish line first, and gold went to her. Felix finished 0.07 seconds behind her. Preliminary round races will be run today, with the finals set for Wednesday night. “I feel emotionally and physically drained at this moment”. “I have some cuts and bruises, a few burns … it hurts”. The photo finish showed the negative image of Miller’s sprawled out body, with her shoulder just barely over the line before Felix reached. Just disappointment, you know.

“I didn’t see anyone until the last 20 metres and the only thing I was thinking was that I must get that gold medal”, explained Miller. I just really wanted it. Felix finished second, followed by Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson. Yes, yes it is.in order to win gold.

While she did not walk away with the gold, the silver still made her the most decorated American woman in track and field history. “The next thing I was on the ground, It’s an wonderful feeling”.

The rules say the win is determined by which athlete has any part of her torso cross the line first.
