Omnium gold for Trott – and two more finals for GB tonight

Four years after taking silver in the women’s omnium, American cyclist Sarah Hammer duplicated that feat on Tuesday.

It’s the kind of relationship you see in the movies; Laura Trott and Jason Kenny have become the golden couple of the Rio Games.

Jason Kenny matched Chris Hoy’s Great British record of six Olympic gold medals after his fiancee Laura Trott became Team GB’s most decorated female Olympian on a dramatic final night of track cycling in Rio.

This meant that every British track cyclist to have ridden at Rio 2016 had come away with a medal, with the nation topping the velodrome medal table for the third straight Games on six gold, four silver and one bronze. “Not been a bad week has it?” he tweeted after his latest win. “Our kids have to get some of these genes right?!”

Trott and Kenny truly are the definition of a power couple.

“They really help me and I couldn’t have done it without everyone, especially Paul Manning my coach”.

The final event of the omnium, where Trott was defending the title she won at London 2012, was the points race, covering 25km and 100 laps of the velodrome.

Kenny added to his earlier men’s sprint and team pursuit golds in Rio, having won twice at London 2012 and once at Beijing four years before that – also getting silver in China. I love him to bits @JasonKenny107!

“I was thinking about my interview if I’d got disqualified, I’d just be saying “rules are rules”.

” You think of people like Sir Chris Hoy who have come and done it time and again, to repeat my success I can’t explain I am so, so, happy”.

Now he has the same number of Olympic medals – Hoy has seven, including a silver from Sydney 2000 – and could go on to surpass the Scot’s tally at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The Peugeot vehicle sales manager, who lives in Adlington, said it was no trouble for him and “because he’s such a nice guy, they are always very nice messages”.

“I hope [life doesn’t change]. I like my life”.

While Trott’s route to glory was never in doubt, her fiances path to Olympic success could not have been more nail-biting.

“I still feel like that little girl just riding around on a bike, but now I have all these gold medals”, Trott said.
