On Disabilities Day, Remember Those Suffering in N. Korea

The focus is on inclusion in society for those with physical or mental disabilities and promoting equal access to transport, employment, education and social and political participation for all.
Since 2015, the Department of Economic and Social Affair organizes a Photo Exhibition.
“Persons with disabilities are not burdens”, the prime minister reiterated. It is promoted by the United Nations since 1992 that aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. There will be different events organised in many settlements to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
“We have seen progress across the world, but persons with disabilities remain one of the most marginalized groups today”, Ms. Bokova said.
“It’s about swapping local knowledge and it’s about using that local knowledge and working out what is here that people are accessing already that’s working well”, she said.
She called for advocacy, sponsorship of public enlightenment workshops on the plight of persons with disabilities, as well as capacity building in information technology, among others.
Mr Dennis Okoro, the Director, MTN Foundation, said taking care of persons with disabilities was part of the sustainable development goals.

“It is imperative for the government to allocate enough financial resources for buying teaching and learning facilities which are friendly to persons with disabilities…it is also high time for health services to be affordable to all people with disabilities”, he emphasized.
