But his legacy will likely stem from the deadly ambush that killed five officers in downtown Dallas.

They offered no details about Brown’s reasoning or his plans after leaving the Dallas Police Department. Their memory will remain with all of us forever. I know the people of Dallas will never forget the ultimate sacrifice they made on the streets of our city that very bad night.

Brown has been police chief since 2010.

“It has been an honor, it has been humbling to serve as the Dallas police chief”, he said.

During Brown’s six-year tenure, the chief has boasted about decreasing crime in Dallas, a trend seen nationally.

Brown’s last day is on October 22.

Mayor Mike Rawlings and City Manager A.C. Gonzalez answered immediate questions about Brown’s announcement in a press conference on September 1.

The chief explained in his statement that he was inspired to become a police officer in Dallas by a desire to bring change to his own Oak Cliff neighborhood.
