On Supreme Court, Republicans can’t keep their story straight

President Barack Obama called again Saturday for Senate Republicans to consider his nominee for the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland.

“I can’t imagine that a Republican-majority Senate, even if it were soon to be a minority, would want to confirm a judge who would move the court dramatically to the left”, he said on “Fox News Sunday”.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) keeps trying to make the argument that his Obstruct Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee strategy is rooted in some deep principle to let the people have a voice.

Since we have no Republicans representing this state in Congress, we’re at least glad to see that New Hampshire’s Kelly Ayotte is one of several GOP senators who plan to meet with Garland in the coming weeks.

Republican presidential candidate John Kasich recently clarified comments he made during an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press” regarding Garland’s nomination. And what we’ve found the last eight years especially with Republicans, Boehner first and McConnell, is everything was obstructed. The principle involved here, Chuck, when an election is underway, as Joe Biden was talking in 1992, an election’s underway, the American people are about to weigh in on who’s going to be the president.

But that’s not the worst of it. Kasich told CBS News that, as president, he would consider nominating the liberal Judge Garland.

Sen, Mitch McConnell, with The Incident Commander Tim Conley, County Judge Executive, tours tornado devastated West Liberty, Kentucky on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

At 28 percent, self-identified Republicans were more likely to say that lawmakers were trying to include Americans in the process, compared to 13 percent of independents and 9 percent of Democrats.

Garland, 63, is widely viewed as a moderate acceptable to many Republicans.

Think Progress contributor Ian Millhiser said this statement proves the idea of letting the people decide on a Supreme Court pick “is a sham”, and he is not entirely wrong.

If McConnell is still capable of shame, now would be an excellent time for him to recognize just how sad a display he’s putting on for the nation.

This Republican support has likely stemmed from the fact that while Garland is considered liberal, he isn’t perceived as being too liberal, Law Prof. “I don’t think they’re going to go”, said Nevada Sen.

However, the president argued: “At a time when our politics are so polarized; when norms and customs of our political rhetoric seem to be corroding – this is precisely the time we should treat the appointment of a Supreme Court justice with the seriousness it deserves”.

This passage plainly states the current president should nominate Supreme Court justices and not wait for the next elected president.
