Smith, who had already established himself as Grammy Award-winning rapper Fresh Prince, moved into the mainstream with his show about an urban teenager who gets shipped off to live with his uncle and aunt in Bel-Air.
Last month, the news broke of a Fresh Prince of Bel Air reboot in development, with Will Smith jumping on as executive producer. And it seems that the song has only grown in popularity over the decades, with famous musicians, late night hosts and even Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek throwing down their own rendition of the song.
“It’s no wonder people still talk about it 25 years on”. Luckily, that wasn’t the case with Carlton Banks, the preppy, conservative straight-shooter brought to life by Alfonso Ribiero.
Here are eight reasons why we’ll always have a soft spot for Will, Carlton, Hilary, Uncle Phil, Geoffrey and co. The Ribiero’s character remained so popular over the years that he was invited to perform on Dancing with the Stars.
“The best thing about the show for me were Will’s cousin Hilary’s outfits”. This isn’t to say, the actor hasn’t also made great films; but when it comes to his lesser works, the nearly boundless reservoir of charm possessed by the artist formerly known as The Fresh Prince has gone a long way to making these duds palatable. But the show still serves as a ’90s time capsule of sorts, showcasing the bright-colored fashion and cultural trends that dominated the decade.
