On their convention’s eve, Democrats bedeviled by email

Kaine pointed out that FBI Director James Comey concluded a year-long investigation by announcing that Clinton should not be prosecuted for her use of a private email server as secretary of state.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Hillary Clinton’s campaign sought to squelch a political firestorm over hacked emails that deepened dissent among Bernie Sanders’ loyal supporters, turning to some of the party’s biggest stars Monday to heal divisions on the Democratic convention’s opening night.

Sanders has endorsed Clinton, but his delegates are pushing for a state-by-state tally.

As Clinton spoke, Democrats struggled with their own internal disputes after party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned Sunday under pressure from hacked emails. But convention delegates pledged to Vermont Sen. “America’s best days are still ahead of us, my friends”, Clinton said during a campaign event Saturday in Miami.

By picking Sen. Tim Kaine as her running mate, Hillary Clinton just made it harder for progressives to support her. She’s made it absolutely clear that she doesn’t care what progressives think. Clinton joked that he “plays a mean harmonica”.

More than 5,000 delegates are among the 50,000 people set to attend the four-day convention, which is expected to culminate with Clinton being named the party’s official nominee for president.

On Monday, Clinton said, “I believe he and all Americans prisoners of war are heroes and deserve the respect that that entails”.

“He really understands what the average citizen has to deal with – that’s what you get when you’re on city council”, Jamison said.

Some people in Philadelphia are coming together not for Clinton but for clean energy and for Bernie Sanders, who is scheduled to speak Monday night along with first lady Michelle Obama. The program was also chockfull of up-and-coming Democratic lawmakers.

“I think there are a lot stronger candidates like (Massachusetts Sen.) Elizabeth Warren or Bernie himself who could have helped to energize the left wing of the Democratic Party, ” he said.

In a statement last week that served to burnish his bipartisan credentials, Toomey praised Kaine when Clinton announced him as her vice presidential choice, saying that he and Kaine have “worked closely” on legislation addressing the opioid crisis and helping first responders, and that Kaine supported his gun measures to limit access to criminals and the mentally ill.

‘We know that there are Republicans who share our concerns and want to be part of the solution, not just peddling fear and bigotry, ‘ she said. “We’re going to have a convention this week that highlights success stories”.

“It is beneath the character of the kind of dialogue we should have”, Kaine said.

Trump’s campaign has dismissed suggestions that the Russians may be trying to influence the election in his favor.

A cybersecurity firm they employed found traces of at least two sophisticated hacking groups on their network – both of which have ties to the Russian government. Those hackers took at least a year’s worth of detailed chats, emails and research on Trump, according to a person knowledgeable of the breach who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Her supporters pushed back, standing on chairs and yelling at the Sanders people to step back or sit down.

But the congresswoman had hoped to still fulfill her official duties in Philadelphia, taking the stage to gavel the convention in and out – scenarios that became untenable by midday Monday.

“I have decided that in the interest of making sure that we can start the Democratic convention on a high note that I am not going to gavel in the convention”, she told a newspaper in her south Florida district, the Sun-Sentinel.
