Once Again, Massachusetts Had Nation’s Highest ACT Scores

For yet another consecutive year, students in our public and private schools had the highest scores on ACT standardized tests nationwide.

According to MDE, an ACT benchmark score is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indicate a 50 percent chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75 percent chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses, which include English Composition, Algebra, Social Science and Biology.

In Glynn County, Brunswick High School graduates had an average composite score below the state and national average. The average composite score fell from 20.1 to 17.6.

“From 2011 to 2015, Kentucky public school graduates made gains in every subject and more than a three-quarter point improvement in the overall composite score”, Pruitt said. The average Stockton score in English was 21.1 and 22.4 in reading.

Of the 55 students in the Lakeview Class of 2016, 37 took the ACT. That compares to the national average of 20.8. Of the four midwestern states that test all public school students, Minnesotans fared the best with an average score of 21.1.

Minnesota led the 18 states that tested 100 percent of students – including Wisconsin, where the average score was 20.5. In the past, only those likely to go to college were taking the ACT.

Other sub-scores held steady compared to past year, with English at 21.5, math at 22.1 and science at 22.4.

The ACT sets the college readiness benchmark score at 18 for English. The proportion aspiring to higher levels of education dropped by 6 percent.

For the 2016 graduating class report, ACT Inc. used students’ scores from the last time they took the test, either as a junior or senior.

Compared to last year’s graduating class, close to 20,000 more students took the exam – an increase of 42 percent. Just 60 percent of Wisconsin students met that benchmark.

She added, “At this time, it’s important to remember that this is one important measure among many, and is an opportunity for schools across our state to make adjustments that help ensure that more students are successful on the ACT”.

In 2015, Georgia ranked 28th in the nation in ACT scores, and the state ranked 30th in 2014. The highest possible score is 36.

MA had the highest composite average- while students in Nevada fared the worst.

The district had a 59 percent participation rate, according to the school district. The Nebraska Department of Education has not yet revealed what test students will be taking or exactly the parameters surrounding the details of that assessment.
