Studio estimates on Sunday say “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” brought in a galactic $238 million over the weekend, making it the biggest North American debut of all time.
The film has made $528 million around the world since opening overseas on Wednesday.
The Death Star-sized Thursday night in the USA should also help to boost the film’s outlook for a record breaking opening weekend as well. It has set box office records for biggest opening in countries including the United Kingdom, Australia and Russian Federation.
If final weekend numbers are even better, the film has a shot at matching or eclipsing “Jurassic World”, which garnered a whopping $524.9 million worldwide.
3-D screening accounted for 47% of the night’s grosses on Thursday.
Disney gushed that combined with Friday figures, ticket sales “are pointing to a total day of $100M+ for a new industry record… and the first triple-digit-million day ever!” And, interestingly enough, the crowd was pretty diverse, “About 58 percent of the audience was male”.
That film had the advantage of opening in China on the same weekend it opened everywhere else.
“Force Awakens” toys, clothing, home accessorie sand video games are already selling well in the run up to Christmas. It is the seventh in the “Star Wars” saga, and the first film starring beloved characters like Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia since 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”.
